Basilica Cathedral of Saint Louis is the archdiocese's mother church. Saint Louis Missouri considered the Rome of the West deserves a basilica that evokes a sense of awesome beauty at the same time provides a sense of tranquility and solemnity. The interior beauty of the cathedral provides an atmosphere conducive to deep contemplation. The mosaic were meticulously crafted in the manner of the great Italian architecture masters. It was completed only in 1988 despite the basilica's official completion in 1914. The mosaics are made of Italian colored marble tesserae, and Byzantine colored glass tesserae which were more light reflective. The Basilica Cathedral of Saint Louis contains the largest wall mosaic art outside of Russia.

Absolutely gorgeous architecture! I spent about 30 minutes peacefully walking around inside. Very peaceful, inspiring and deserving of reverence.

Of all of the cathedrals in the US that I have been to personally (and granted, I have not yet been to all of them), the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica is far and away my favorite. The floor-to-ceiling mosaic art is so exquisite that it is out of this world. I could have spent hours in there just being awed by the mosaic art, and plan to visit again anytime I can find the opportunity to do so!

If you are going to St. Louis, you must visit this Cathedral. I have never seen anything like that in the US before. It was a great experience which the words can't describe. You can park free outside on the road. There is an information desk as soon as you enter it. Gentleman was very friendly and helpful. Provided the map and showed me to way to museum which is in the basement. The art all over the cathedral is magnificent. I went there on Saturday. There were people but was not crowded.
