My experience at the Renfrew Center was a complete nightmare. The program utilizes a very one-size-fits-all approach — forcing you to sit through repetitive, rudimentary groups and shaming you if you opt against their step-down treatment program. At Renfrew (at least in my experience), it’s all about the number on the scale. You’re going through emotional and physical distress? It doesn’t matter, we’re punishing you because your weight hasn’t increased enough. Your weight starts to fluctuate on the scale? They accuse you over and over of using disordered behaviors or exercising in your room. You’re hyper-metabolic? Let’s punish you by forcing you to sit in the community room ALL DAY to prevent you from excessive movement. After your discharge, the staff at Renfrew suggests that you step down to their PHP program to keep yourself accountable. This is a daily program, and, as a full time college student, I do not have time in my schedule to make that commitment. I chose not to continue with PHP, and I was shamed by the Renfrew staff who insisted I would relapse without it. The day of my discharge, my therapist surprised me with a family therapy video call and ridiculed me for not choosing PHP in front of my parents. What a great way to exit. If you’re looking for a treatment center that can help with your eating disorder and treat you with respect, skip this one.

My daughter stayed here for 2 weeks while she was at her lowest weight, 3 years ago. She was so unhappy while she was there. This is not uncommon because she truly did not want to be there. After her stay, she came home in tears telling me how the staff was horrible to her and the other patients. She said they kept her in the room for up to 6 hours at a time, her therapist wouldn't let her talk about anything but food and what she ate and they also had no idea what the patients were doing behind the staff's back. Apperantly, girls were still using eating disorder habbits, being cruel to each other and sneaking things in their rooms and through each other. This stay here was a total waste of our time and put my daughter 10 steps behind from where we started. Very unimpressed. I have seen the responses to other reviews about the doccumentery \Thin\ but in my opinion, every parent should watch that before sending their children there. My daughter's experience was almost as bad as what some of the girls who went there in the movie. Please do your research before you admit your family member.

please, please, PEASE do not go here. the staff is horrible to patients and i was treated like a child even though im 26. please save the money and time and find a real recovery center.

Thanks for \helping\ Polly. We still grieve her loss and wonder what if. If my rehab dismissed me, I would have felt hopeless too. Do better, Renfrew! You deal with the sickest of the sick and to double down on your decision as her mother cried and begged you! I'm sure you charged their insurance plenty though. Hope it was worth it.

Very young community. Adolescents and adults are not seperate. Many staff are interns and uneducated. Only meet with nutritionist once a week for half hour. Groups are basic and really only benefit first time patients only. Rules and regulations never outlined, and staff constantly repremands and barrates patients. Therapy moduals basic and not helpful. No hands on food prep. I have been to many eating disorder treatment centers, and this one takes the cake for the hands down worst one i have ever been to! Typical they push weight restoration, however their therapy to encompas mind and emotions lag behind... their recovery philosiphy is flawed, inapt and extreemly dissapointing. Do not waste your time at this facility!!!
