Empowered Conversation is a survivor-activated online tool that educates and prepares the person they will disclose to in how best to respond to sexual assault before the conversation takes place. >>When a survivor is ready to disclose about their assault, they visit our website and input the cell phone number of the person they want to disclose to. >>That person then receives a text message from our site that says someone they love wants to have a conversation with them around sexual assault and are provided with a link to a short, trauma-informed module on assault, how best to respond, and what not to say so as not to re-trigger the survivor. >>When the module is complete, a text is generated back to the survivor, letting them know the person they want to disclose to is ready to have the conversation. Research shows that the first person a survivor discloses to about their assault, if they give a negative reaction or don’t believe the survivor, can double the survivor’s healing time. Our tool works to mitigate the possible negative effects of the survivor’s disclosure experience by providing this advanced coaching to the person they will be disclosing to.
