What a beautiful parish - the people, the ambiance, the preaching and to have so much beauty in spite of the damage this building has endured from storm waters as a result of hurricanes over the years. I attended daily mass - 12:10 PM M-F in the summer and was impressed by the high attendance (80-95 folks), the diversity, the reverence and the steadfast joy of the congregation! I highly recommend. All are welcome in the catholic Church.

St. Mary Cathedral Basilica is one of two cathedrals of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Located in Galveston, TX, it is the mother church of the Catholic Church in Texas, as well as a minor basilica. On February 6, 1842, one month before his consecration as a bishop, Fr. Jean Marie Odin, C.M. dedicated a small wooden-framed church to the Blessed Virgin Mary. A small sacristy was later added, as well as the addition of thirty benches. In 1847, construction began on a larger, permanent church. On May 4, 1847, Pope Pius IX approved the establishment of the Diocese of Galveston and named Odin as its first bishop. St. Mary Cathedral was dedicated on November 26, 1848. St. Mary Cathedral was named a Texas state historic landmark in 1968 and a national historic landmark in 1973.

Found this wonderful place of Worship more Beautiful than the last of many visits! The ambiance of Grandeur was heightened by the fact that this not just an Ordinary Catholic Church! It was rededicated as a Basilica many years back, and now holds a Very Prominent position among all the churches of the Houston/Galveston Diocese as well as other such designated places around the world! She, St. Mary's Basilica, has survived numerous Hurricanes, and flooding from severe storms that have affected our Beloved Island! She is truly a place that welcomes visitors of all Denominations of Faith for Prayer and Worship.
