If your child wants to play football for the first time, AYF is not for them. They won't play. The Gilbert Dawgs won a championship trophy, and kudos to the hard working kids that made it happen. They played both offense and defense every game for the whole game, with very little if any time on the sidelines. Over half the team stood on the sidelines cheering for their teammates, even though on average they played less than 5 min per game if at all. Unfortunately the coaches did not allow the season to be a TEAM effort. If your player came to the team with existing football skills, they had a chance to play. If they came to the team new to playing football, regardless of their enthusiasm to learn and even natural athletic ability, the coaches were not interested in coaching these children outside of letting them be the practice pawns for the select few who got to play. We're talking about 8 & 9 year olds who earned no benefit for faithfully showing up to every practice and working hard. No, all they earned was an opportunity to stand on the sidelines and cheer on the less than half their team being the only ones who played. The non-players sure deserve an award for good sportsmanship!! The coaches on the other hand are a disgrace to the community who care about ALL kids. It makes one wonder if the kids who played paid more than the other kids, but I doubt it. Maybe the coaches cared more about the win and their own personal glory than building a real team. They didn't have a 1st or 2nd string of players, nor an offense or defense line - only a select few who played all the time. Football is supposed to be a team sport, but not the way AYF does it. The team won the 30 to 0. I feel sad for the other team. Started the 4th quarter 24 to 0, the Gilbert Dawgs coaches couldn't even risk putting in their non-players and perhaps let the other team score.
