The Fire Tower is awesome. The views from the top are particularly impressive. At least I assume they are, given the tower is on top of a mountain and was originally designed for spotters to be able to see for miles so they could see smoke if a fire broke out somewhere. Now it's pretty much fallen into disuse and the lowest ladder was removed years ago to stop people climbing it. Because, you know, health and safety and all that. At least this thing being closed can't be blamed on the coronavirus. Now the tower is little more than a point of interest on the Standing Stone Trail. That said, the trail is well worth a hike and frankly it's worth hiking again and again and again even without the fire tower to walk past. The clearing area here is a nice place to take a break - you can look at the tower, there's a little fire pit a short way away and there's at least one other trail beside the SST that winds its way from the clearing. I've heard sporadic rumors that the fire tower may one day be reopened to the public. That would be really good - although a few people periodically scale the legs to the lowest platform and then climb to the top you're not supposed to, and it would be really good for the less agile among us to be able to take in the undoubtedly remarkable views the highest platform would offer.

It was a good hike from Greenwood Furnace up the Standing Stone Trail. Kept moving and legs were burning by the time the trail leveled off and came to Seeger Road. Continued up to the tower and found that the lower level/first flight is gone (as others state) and the tower is in an even greater state of disrepair. Made a loop of the trip and went down via Seeger Rd/Telephone Trail (hard to find from Seeger, no marker front what we saw, just a ribbon tied to a tree branch). Overall, some good things to see, decent hike, but anticlimactic.

We had a great time up there on top of the mountain. The view is awesome. There have been a lot of changes since the last time we visited. The road going up to the top is in much better shape than what I remembered! And there was less trash laying around, also a plus. It's a great place to camp for a night or two.
