Unpaved road is fun (challenging) to drive through. You need a JEEP (not Mustang) for it. Enjoy and have fun. \u003e Get full coverage for your car.

Be aware they lock the outer road gate at 7 pm!! We were wondering why so many cars were leaving BEFORE the fantastic sunset - it’s because they literally close the park at 7 pm. The 3.5 mile road in and out is in terrible condition so allow time and AWD for that! The beach is nice, plenty of picnic tables and nice facilities - just wished they stayed open at least half an hour after sunset!

CAUTION: If you do not have a vehicle that can handle large rocks and a high center, the road to the beach is very hazardous to your vehicle. You WILL bottom out and potentially do damage. There are no signs that warn you of this, but take caution. The Beach is great!!!! We loved it and spent the entire day surfing, picnicking, and swimming. There are facilities, picnic tables, etc. Great place to spend the day.

What a great white sand beach to go to for the day! The sand was soft, the water was perfect, and the waves were just right. You can snorkel and see sea turtles and beautiful fish. Bathrooms are available but bring snacks or lunch since there are no food stands around.

I love this beach and go every time I'm here on the big island. This time I rented a jeep. (WINK) Those that know KNOW. Snorkeling with sea turtles and seeing monk seals is great as well as the sunsets here. A definite MUST SEE

Great beaches across a series of coves. Once you park @ Makalawena walk right the first beach has some white sand but slightly less fine. Go past the historic red buildings and the lava rock path (good shoes for this section are preferable vs flip flops) to find fine white sand beaches .

A rough but manageable 3.5 mile dirt road from the highway to the beach. We went around 10 am and found the parking lot mostly empty. The swimming isn't the best due to rocks but with swim shoes it was okay. Some surfers were taking advantage of the swells. Lots of shade.

First of all, if you have low clearance, don’t go. It’s possible, we saw a Chevy Malibu just cruise through the 4 miles, but we had a Tahoe, and we were rocking around. Excess of speed bumps, and the toilets reek, but the views, the waves, it’s all worth it.
