I went to buy Queso fresco and Queso añejo enchilado because supposedly the girl who attended me told me it is cheese brought from Mexico and when I got home I tried it and the taste, texture, quality is the same as the one sold in any supermarket, I’m very disappointed.

In 2001, two brothers from Puebla (Mexico) started what is today an institution on 116th Street (East Harlem, El Barrio). Enrique and Benito Lezama had a dream: A Mexican grocery store supplying the needs of a growing Mexican population in the Area. Enrique had experience with supermarkets and provided “know-how”. Benito would take care of “day-to-day” management efforts. A combination of knowledge, location and quality, has positioned this business as a leading Mexican grocer in East Harlem and the ONLY Mexican supermarket on 116th Street. After Enrique decided to retire, Benito took over the entire operation, expanding it to supermarket quality, featuring several sections along well-supplied alleys. The store has a nostalgic look, reminding iconic “Abarroteras”. As you walk in, you are transported to Mexico, under a visual explosion of typical products, ranging from produce to household products. The Owner is proud of his dry good and cheese selections (all imported from Mexico). He also maintains originality by offering local (Mexican) fresh produce, such as: Papaló, Epazote, Hoja Santa, Tlapanche, Huaje, Huanzontle, Pipinella, and Halaches, offering an excellent opportunity for culinary sybarites, or food aficionados looking for exotic herbs and spices, to venture into classic Mexican cuisine, using true, local ingredients (no substitutions!).
