The Northampton city hall may be a place to fill out papers and sign documents but it is also a place of historical significance. Built in 1850, it combines many architectural styles including Gothic, Tudor, and Norman. A past mayor in 1923 tries to have it torn down. Some notable visitors include: Abolitionists Fredrick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, writers Henry Ward Beecher and Ralph Waldo Emerson, lawmakers William Lloyd Garrison and Oliver Holmes.
