During the great telescope famine of 2020, I went to OC telescopes in hopes to get a rig to view the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. When i arrived, somebody was paying for the last telescope in the store. Fueled by absolute desperation I bought the last tripod... sans optic. As Mike helped me load the tripod into my car, he must have seen me: a 36 year old dude hoping to regain his childhood passion for astronomy. I was busy loading the boxes in my car when he handed me his personal Orion Apex and said “Merry Christmas, you can return this to me when you’re done with the thing.” 10pm, fingers nearly frozen... first light: a view of the moon’s pitted surface that I will never forget. From the 12-year-old me... tippy toed on a chair, pasting the glow-in-the-dark solar system stickers on the ceiling over my bed: thank you Mike!
