DownCity Design helps people design solutions for their communities. We’re improving cities by inviting citizens to imagine and create better futures, using the tools of design. We believe in the power of design to solve problems, and in the power of young people to change the world. Our youth programs and community design dialogues are making urban neighborhoods safer, healthier, and more livable, while empowering residents to become agents of change. DownCity Design was founded in 2009 by Adrienne Gagnon and Manuel Cordero, with the mission of improving Providence by getting young people involved in designing and building solutions for their communities. We were concerned by an AIA report on the low numbers of minorities and women entering the design professions. Then some Providence teens told us they skip school when it’s raining out because there are no bus shelters along their route. DCD was born of a desire to empower youth to solve problems like these. ​ Since our founding, DownCity Design has grown rapidly, transforming the lives of over 700 youth who have participated in our programs so far.
