Great place. Got a little turned around coming home. Be sure to leave well before dark.

Historical plaque inscription: A Monument to Determination and Perseverance, William Henry "Burro" Schmidt took thirty eight years to hand dig this half-mile long tunnel -- Completed in 1936. Born in Rhode Island, January 30, 1871. Died in Ridgecrest, Calif., January 27, 1954.
This was a fun little place to check out. You need a map or know where it is though, signage is not very plentiful. There were quite a few people there, it's a popular place. You walk through the tunnel, be sure to bring a flashlight, & watch your head as it's low in some places. On the other side there's a nice view of the valley, good for pictures but not much room. You have to go back the same way you came. The story is kinda sad, there's a plaque out front that tells a little about the man who spent 30 yrs digging the tunnel, for a shorter route to town. Definitely worth the trip at least once.
Great example of persistence in the face of adversity and despite the extreme weather. Different times for sure. Road was manageable in a car- WAZE got us there.
Trip was great but on way home got turned around onto an off road route, major damage to car. Main road was fine Carol
A wonder!!!!! If you try to wrap your head around how a man did this you will go insane!!! Love it i have clostrophobia and still managed to make it through to the other side. LOVED EVERY STEP OF THIS MINI ADVENTURE!
Good easy off road trek...we saw a wild chinchilla hidden in the cave. Check out the ash mines nearby.
Pretty cool spot. I was the only one there (Feb., weekday afternoon). Walking through the tunnel can be eerie if you allow your mind to go wild. Getting there is a slow drive because of the dirt/rock road. But I made it in my 4 door Sentra.
