I was in town on business and wanted to get in a good training session. A friend and guy I used to train under knows a few people from here and he recommended the place. Here was my experience: Training - very good instruction. The black belt was teaching a similar series my home academy is working on. However, the roots black belt highlighted some details for capturing the arm which I had not known. Environment - very chill. Good music (I know this is subjective, but I was digging the tunes). Clean environment, showers with towels, water is available if you forget your bottle water. Overall, it was a great experience. I'll go back there in a heartbeat. - Rob

Great instruction. Great people. That's really it. If you want to hear my story, come in because chances are, I'm there.

Clean. Professional. Challenging. Beginner friendly. After joining this family I have noticed the above things and many many more, if you pride yourself on fitness, cleanliness, and becoming an absolute savage this is the place for you.

This place is just what I've been looking for. All trainers are amazing, the facility is sleek, clean, and full of positive energy. All participants have the same goal and become like family. Best classes I've ever taken.

A really great atmosphere for training. Not too many big egos, which can sometimes be an issue with martial arts gyms. The male/female balance is pretty solid--not just in numbers but attitude as well. Would definitely recommend to women looking to train (also for selfish reasons because I always want more women training jiujitsu!) The space is gorgeous. I keep describing it to people as my zen garden for fighting. Light colored mats accented by bamboo and warm brown leather heavy bags. Very clean at all times and Burt's Bees products in the locker room. Instructors are knowledgable and you always get a great workout--since it is all inclusive, I've been trying out sports and classes I may never done independently and really enjoying them!

Great atmosphere, friendly staff. As soon as You walk in you feel at home! Every is great and the training is fantastic. They provide awesome programs like; Brazilian jiu-jitsu, strength and conditioning, Muay Thai and submission grappling. The coaching staff is very knowledgeable and caring. Is a great experience. Go and see for your self!

Professor Levi does a great job passing his plethora of knowledge on to his students and is always looking for ways to help improve your BJJ game. He's always willing to jump in and rolls with anyone. The atmosphere at Roots is much more centered compared to many fight gyms where people are just looking to smash each other. It's a great learning environment, not just to improve your jiu jitsu, but for all aspects of your life.

There are three simple reasons why Roots is a five star experience: (1) first rate facilities, (2) first rate instruction, and (3) first rate people. First, the gym, lockers, and equipment are beautiful. The gym makes great use of space, everything is well organized, well maintained, and CLEAN. Check out Philadelphia Magazine’s description of Roots in the 2017 “Best of Philly” edition for a perfect summary. Second, Roots’ instructors are the best. I feel like I can offer a unique perspective on the gym’s instructors because I train regularly with each one of them and my kids train here in the kids’ Brazilian jiu jitsu program. Roots’ instructors all deliver detailed, highly technical instruction that connects with all levels of student abilities. Whether you’re a new white belt with limited or no experience (like me) or an experienced competitor, Roots’ instructors will improve your game. The kids’ program is also worth a special shout out, there is no one I trust with my kids’ safety and jiu jitsu training more than Morgan Beverly and Kyle Huang. I have two sons who train at Roots and not only do they have tons of fun, but they are developing important skills that translate to all other sports and everyday life like core strength, body awareness, dexterity, self confidence, etc. Add in the fun, exercise, and new friends, and it’s a kids program that can’t be beat. Finally, the people are the core of what makes Roots the best. From head instructor Levi LaLonde down to the newest student, the Roots’ environment is supportive, positive, and fun. My training partners always push me to be better and help me to improve; it’s expected here. Don’t worry if you’re new, no one has forgotten what it’s like to be a beginner, so everyone works together – the teamwork ethos makes everyone better, faster. Quit thinking about it and give Roots a try, you’ll know right away if Brazilian jiu jitsu is right for you. If it is, then Roots is the place to train.
