Tahnks for having us for dinner. We decided to visit the restaurant due to not having Eritrean food in Chicago. Overall we had enjoyed unusual taste and flavors. Especially was a treat videos of Eritrean pop singers on TV. Pla e needs lots of care and love to make it happen on a different level, but we were happy to visit and enjoy hosts explanation about his native country! You did a great job!

What a great spot! If you're looking for something new, come here! Friendly, family run business. Oh and amazing food!

The food here was amazing. Unfortunately, the service was not. We were the only customers in the restaurant at noon on a Sunday. There was a guy bashing in a car and tossing items at it in the parking lot in the rear of the restaurant. I immediately asked for the check because I didn't feel safe. Also, the car he was bashing in was parked right next to mine. The staff didn't stop the guy. Apparently, he knew the staff somehow. I just kept asking for the check, but the server kept insisting that we stay. I kept demanding a check be brought. She finally brought it. Strange place, and not in the best of locations, but the food was excellent!

This was my second time eating this nationality 's food. Ate it once and had to go back for more. They have delicious food and healthy selections, bottled water not tap water. I was impressed.

Asmara is an amazing restaurant! It is very authentic East African cuisine. Essentially that means a large pancake like bread called injera that has various vegetables and meats on top of it. Instead of using a fork like Americans do, you tear off pieces of the bread and pick up the food and eat with your fingers just like they do in Africa! This is also a small mom-and-pop owned restaurant and the owners are very nice, however English is clearly not their first language and they can be somewhat shy and guarded until they get to know you. Save yourself thousands of dollars on airfare and go to the San Diego Zoo or safari park to see wild animals and then go to Asmara to enjoy the unique exotic Cuisine of Africa! Oh, they are vegetarian-friendly and also serve meat and chicken dishes.

I love this place! I've been 5-6 times and the food is always amazing. Normally I have a friend or two with me that hasn't tried Ethiopian so we'll split the vegetarian combo and the meat combo. Grab a veggie or meat Samosa or two for an appetizer they're great and the sauce served with them is simply incredible. I've read a few of the reviews stating that the service was terrible, however, I have never received less than 5 star service. The servers are always prompt in seating us and always check up every few minutes to see if we need more water or injera. The only bad thing I can say about Asmara is that every time I come here they are out of their Honey Wine so I haven't been able to try it yet. Other than that, 5 stars all around.

I came in for lunch, 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon. I was the only customer there so they said to sit wherever I wanted. They have a shaded porch in the back, so I chose to sit out there. One of the owners asked me, "Really? You want to sit out there?" Seemed a little rude to me, but whatever, not a big deal. I asked him what he would recommend from the menu and he pointed to the two largest and most expensive items on the menu which were sampler platters. When I asked him which single item from the sampler was best, he just kept repeating the whole sampler platter. I ended up ordering something other than the sampler platter, one of their appetizers, and just water to drink. Apparently they don't do free water, because they brought me a bottle and charged me for it. It took them over 15 minutes to bring me (the only customer) the appetizer I ordered. They checked back once on me while I was eating, but not near the end of the meal so I ended up having to go in and get my check from them where I found the server having a conversation with someone on the phone. She didn't bother to hang up or even put them on hold as I asked for the check and she handed it to me. The food tasted fine, but the rest of the experience was so bad that I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are other places to get food just as good (or better) and have a much better dining experience in general.

This is our second home, best Ethiopian food in San Diego. Teme is the owner, very friendly and warm person. My wife wants to eat their everyday. She can sleep and live on Injera. She loves the vegetarian plate and I love their Beef plate. Ethiopian cooking can be heavy on meat -- but the east African country's cuisine is also full of delicious and super-satisfying dishes that are perfect for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten and lactose-free eaters. Hakim beer is must try, Hakim Stout is best Ethiopian beer I have tried. We would go there again and AGAIN.
