This place, like any other place that offers people opportunities for personal growth and a shot at something, is only as good and as effective as those that take full advantage of it. If you happened to go to Gary and failed, you did not try hard enough to obtain what you wanted out of it.Most people just show up, same attitude, same drive and zero ambition, not one ounce of gratitude for the opportunity, so they just stay bitter, uncooperative and wonder why they got nothing to show for. When i went there in the 2000's i had a purpose, to succeed, not to do drugs or hang out with people with no desire to do better in life. When i got out i had a diploma, an education, driver's license, life experience and steady employment in the trade i decided to take. For those of you thinking about going, make sure that's what you want, even if you are \forced\ to go, take advantage of it, make the best of it and come out a winner.

I graduated the welding program in 1978 and secured immediate employment in Corpus Christi. After several years gaining experience in various shops and construction sites I joined the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters from which I recently retired. I am forever grateful to Gary for helping a young delinquent like myself not only learn a lifelong trade but also take the first steps of responsibility in becoming a man.I would recommend this program to any young person that is struggling for direction in life.

An 18 yr old, left the fast lane life of Los Angeles to spend two years at Gary, 1965-67. Wow! You might be thinking, yes it was a long time ago (73 yrs old now). Gary was quite different back then, military barracks, bunks and lockers. It was my first step to turning my life around. It was difficult but it helped to learn how to cope and interact with others. I joined the Army shortly after graduating. The skills acquired at Gary helped with my working life and even helped with what the Army life would bring my way, including one year in Vietnam. Don't give up or give in you wonderful young people.

I loved this job corps. The reason I'm writing this is because I was just thinking about the good times I had there back in 2004-2005. I might some great people there and I wish I could meet them again. I wish I could meet the female that I use to talk to and who use to braid my hair. After I left job corps I went back home to Mississippi and then moved to Alabama and started working in a mine call Hoover INC. Crush&Stone in Huntsville AL. I moved back home after a year and a half. I started working in our furniture factory and roofing housing with my best friend. After that, I started driving Tractor Trailers at the age of 21 but grew up driving them in my teens because I was raised on a dead-end road that was a corn field. I moved to Arkansas and Texas again. Then I moved to Indianapolis IN for a while back in 2009-2010. After I left there I moved back to my hometown. Then I moved to Minnesota where I have been since 2012. I have traveled the whole U.S while getting paid and I still travel the U.S after over a million miles later. I'm 34 now going on 35 June 25th with 4 kids one by my ex-wife who is a 14-year-old girl. I have 3 kids which are one girl 6 years old and two boys 2 years old and 2 months old after being in a 9-year relationship. I am planning on getting married again after my 10th year and maybe one more kid. I wouldn't change anything I have done in life. Gary helped me become a man at 17 and I took off from there.
