I have recently taken the ASA 114 cat certification from Emory in Long Beach. Emory's focus on crew safety and boat handling while also having fun provided for a great learning experience. I would recommend Emory for anyone looking to hone their larger boat sailing skills.

I had an awesome experience on a long getaway weekend with the guys for a vacation/certification for ASA 101, 103 and 104 out of long beach and around Catalina Island. Cptn Heisler was energetic, funny, and a good all around guy to hang out with from shopping to provision the boat to the deep dive into the technical aspects of navigation. The boat was awesome and the instruction top notch.

I spent two days with Captain Emory working on my certifications. He is a great teacher and a very patient instructor. He breaks down complicated concepts into easy to understand language. I highly recommend him and his services.

I have completed the ASA103 and ASA104 courses through Southwest Sailing. Emory provided an unforgettable sailing and instruction experience spiced with lots of good practical advice and coaching. Thanks Emory - I can only recommend you as a sailing instructor and course organizer.

Even though I already had my ASA 103 certification, when the opportunity to take Emory’s 103/104 live aboard class, I took it. I thought—heck, a little review definitely wouldn’t hurt and let’s go sailing! Best choice I’ve made in a long time! Not only did I get a solid review of skills I have been building since the 103 class, I also got a fresh new look at many things previously learned. His strong teaching skills and equally strong sailing knowledge helped many things that have been fuzzy for me just CLICK into place. I walked away from this weekend with a lot more confidence in things I was already doing and a ton more new skills. I have taken the ASA course from several different locations/instructors now. Emory’s approach, organization and thoroughness makes his the best I have taken to date. Many previous instructors work through the list of ASA objectives and check each off the list as he or she presents it. Emory of course did this too, but took it one, subtle and important step further. Instead of giving that objective a checkmark once he “taught it,” he used a much more effective, stakeholder-focused approach. For each certification (103 & 104), he brought a one-page laminated rubric on board. After the two days, he gave us each some time to go through the card and ask questions on anything we still weren’t clear on and re-do any instructions or practicals we still felt unsure about. That is to say, the item didn’t get a checkmark until we the students stated our comfort and understanding of the section. A subtle yet extremely powerful and effective way to approach the instruction. If you want to learn sailing, I highly recommend heading out with Emory!
