Not a St. Louis native, but sure glad a friend told me about this place! Great little deli, affordable prices and excellent customer service! Once of my favorite places to eat during the pandemic when I’m locked inside! :)

For the best Ruben sandwiches in 2 states Pumpernickles has everyone else beat. Dining room wasn't open cause of Covid. So we ate in the car, but came prepared with roll of paper towels and a bag to put trash in. Please note Ruben there are messy and will need the paper towels.

I’m a St. Louis native, born and raised. I live in Texas now, but every time I come home to visit, I go to Pumpernickel’s. I don’t know what’s going on with Harlan (the owner) and his family, and I don’t want to harshly judge their situation from the outside. Objectively speaking as a restaurant customer, however, Pumpernickel’s fell way short of the mark today. Called ahead to make sure they were open; Harlan answered rudely and hung up on me. I thought “they might be having an extra busy day” and swung by anyway. The place was dead, except for one dine in customer and one waiting on to go food who was there when I arrived. I waited 8 minutes in front of the deli counter and was passed by 3 different employees, one I think was Harlan’s son, all of whom ignored me. The poor woman waiting for her to go order was about to have to give up her order as she was running out of time on her lunch break. It’s sad to see how the pandemic has ravaged small businesses and contributed to the breakdown of social niceties. I have to give 1 star to be honest about the poor service (lack of!) I received, but I truly hope the restaurant turns it back around as that was a terrible way to see a St. Louis favorite being run.

Whats with the rude service? I'm not the only one noticing based on other reviews. Get a new phone person, this guy is burnt out and it radiates. As I write this someone just walked out because she hadn't been so much as spoke to and the phone is ringing without being answered. My order was incorrect and I got an eye roll. I could easily take my 55 right up the road.

Great sandwich overall. The meat is great, but the bread is just ok. The Latkes were very good, but had onions in them. I like the onions in it but never seen them like this before. I would definitely recommend coming here.
