In 2020 I’ve made a commitment to spend my money as small and locally as possible. My first stop in this store I walked into a weird political ramble that was awkward as one women shushed the other. I was excited to see they had what I wanted and was sharing that with the three women behind the counter and they acted like I was annoying them. I needed more supplies but decided to source them elsewhere. My last stop in was at the end of the day. I opened the door and one of the three women sheepishly tried to scramble and apply her face mask, one greeted me and the other ignored me. I quickly grabbed what I needed, noticed there was less stock than the last time I was there and decided on only a yard when I needed 10 based on their service again. At 23 a yard you’d think that would be a good last minute sale and not an inconvenience but the mask fumbler continued to look at the clock as if to passive aggressively signal that I was out of line. They close at 5pm. A retail establishment. Anyway as she glanced at the clock again while I checked out I said “5 minutes left!” And she replied, “was it that obvious?” And I decided that there were other local establishments I would give my business to. How there were 3 women working in an empty shop baffles my mind in the first place based on wages but to be annoyed by a paying customer and to argue with them about techniques is a great way to lose a customer, and they did.

Treadle is a great source for beautiful, high-quality garment fabrics. They have a well-curated selection that changes with the seasons, but always includes a balanced mix of quality knits and wovens in wearable solids and inspiring prints. I love coming in just to see what's new, and I rarely make it out without buying a couple of yards of something delightful. Prices are higher than chain fabric stores, but part of what you're paying for is the value of having an independent local shop thriving and giving back to the community, and that's worth every penny.
