Made a quick day trip in January 2021 to Chippokes- much needed bonding time. Beautiful winter day, mouth of the James is beautiful. Paid for parking through the portal, stopped by the visitor center to grab a trail map & get our bearings. After the beach we hiked up to the farm & plantation house & kitchen. House & kitchen weren’t open for tours, but still a beautiful day. Ranger & intern were working in the garden at the farm display & were abundantly friendly, full of good information & helpful. Caveat- you can drive to the plantation & farm from the visitor center, but I prefer to walk. The bridge on the trail from the visitor center is washed out & you will have to hike on the road for a portion. This wasn’t an issue in January- but as the weather warms & the park becomes busier- it could be a hazard with humans & cars competing for limited road space.

Visitor Center Staff very helpful and nice. Mansion tour was informative. Chose to leave car at the visitor center and walk to the historical area.. we got in 7 miles here today.

The only reason I didn't rate this park higher is bc the individual trails aren't well marked so you can go on them with intention. We'll end up exploring them all eventually, but would have liked to choose based on the time we had yesterday. The wonderful lady in the kitchens was knowledgeable and very informative. The cookies she gave us were a treat on our trail walk. Don't take shells from the beach but they didn't say i couldn't make art out of them while I was there. Wash your hands though. Read your signs.

The weather looked like it would be really nice, warm too! So we decided to go camping at Chippokes Plantation State Park. Originally was going Monday - Wednesday but decided to call and add a day since Wednesday would be nice and Thursday was supposed to be rainy (which it was!) I spent most of the time on Tuesday and Wednesday looking for shark teeth down at the beach. Liked that the park paved the path down to the beach (but wish there was a path from the camping site to the street, quite a bit out of the way to walk.) I was lucky enough to find three decent sized ones Tuesday, but only one small one on Wednesday. Can’t wait to come back to look for more!

I visited on Dec 31st, 2020 for a stroll and some birding. This was my second visit to the park (previously on a busier summers day). The park was open, but with no staff, an honor payment system (but no payment envelopes nor maps). The visitor center was closed (though washroom facilities were open and well presented). Several trails were closed off due to unrepaired erosion, it seemed. It is a lovely little State Park and the plantation buildings are cute, but it was looking a little forlorn on this visit.
