My family member was admitted on January 6, 2021. He is 67 years old. He had the best care. He was discharged on January 12, 2021. His doctors provided him with the best care. His Nurses always made time to take my calls to keep me informed about his health. They went above and beyond taking care of him. He is fully recovered and doing well.

I'm going to talk about billing. Upon checking in, the guy at the desk took my insurance card and scanned it. I did not verbally give my insurance member ID. Fast Forward to getting my bill a month or two later. 'Wow, that's more than I thought it would be,' I thought to myself. I checked my insurance for the claim, since the bill listed no insurance payment. My insurance said I owed much less. I contacted the billing service to see what was wrong with the billing, and they said my insurance said my plan was not yet active, so I asked for the number they gave my insurance. They only had THE FIRST TWO LETTERS correct. the rest was wildly wrong. If they scan cards at intake, WHY was the number so incorrect? My guess is they try to catch people unawares. so ALWAYS check that they have insurance correct. And ask for an itemized bill if it still high. You're likely to get a smaller bill, since they don't want you to see that they charge 35 for a bandaid. I'm not going to mention the wait time, because enough people here have mentioned how much of a joke it is. And it IS a joke.

PLEASE READ!!! My mother was admitted to Sentara Medical Center on December 27, 2020. She was diabetic with heart, lung, liver, and kidney damage. She was admitted with COVID-19 Pneumonia. She was at first recovering. Then, she started getting anxious because they heard my father talk on the phone with an accent, and so they didn't even try to explain to her what was going on. My father has on record that my mother was restrained and sedated when anxious. My father also has on record that she was NOT FED FOR 7 DAYS, and even the hospital nutritionist said she was SEVERELY MALNOURISHED. My mother was expected to live another 3 years according to her other doctors. She died on January 22, 2021 in that hospital. Officially it was covid-19, and it definitely contributed. But if it were up to me, I would find every other way to sue this hospital and the doctors in charge of her for Medical Malpractice. My mother suffered her last few days at Sentara hospital, in no way comfortable and in no way treated in a humane manner. I will never, EVER, go to this hospital or take any loved one here so they can be treated like an animal.

Terrible communication and unsafe. I am a physician. My grandmother has dementia and was admitted with an acutely abnormal ischemic ekg over the weekend after a syncopal event and positive troponin. They did not allow my grandfather to stay with her. There was no communication from the physician or nurse once admitted. Sunday morning a nurse informs my grandfather that my grandmother will be discharged - no communication from the doctor, no assessment of safety at home, no discussion of what tests were done during admission or what followup is needed. Poor care. Poor communication. I spent hours on the phone for two days trying to speak with someone to help clarify in case my grandfather had misunderstood. My grandfather sat at home by the phone all weekend and no one called. He did not go anywhere to be sure he would not miss a call. I had the same difficulty getting through. I am listed on the medical record as contact and have permission from the patient and family to receive information. I'm embarrassed for this hospital. Their hold message I had to listen to repeatedly is a joke and business pitch not aligned with the reality of the lack of coordinated care. I asked the name of the nurse or charge RN, they would not share it. I asked for a patient advocate and was told no then hung up on. After over an hour on hold and three calls I was able to speak with an RN who seemed appropriately concerned, Kelly. She stated grandma had an EEG (seizure test), no Echo, no other neuro imaging. There was no post ictal period, no bowel or bladder incontinence, no history of seizures. The workup was incomplete and inappropriate. I have asked for the physician to call me. This is borderline malpractice at best and certainly poor medical care.
