African American Civil War Museum Reviews | Rating 4.7 out of 5 stars (5 reviews)

African American Civil War Museum is located in Washington, United States on 1925 Vermont Ave NW. African American Civil War Museum is rated 4.7 out of 5 in the category history museum in United States. The mission of the African American Civil War Museum is to correct a great wrong in American history that largely ignored the enormous contributions of the 209,145 members of the United States Colored Troops. It tells the stories and preserves for posterity the historic roles these brave men of African, European, and Hispanic descent played in ending slavery and keeping America united under one flag. The Museum utilizes a rich collection of artifacts, documents, primary sources and technology to create a meaningful learning experience for families, students, Civil War enthusiasts and historians about the period from the American Civil War to Civil Rights and beyond. The African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation was incorporated in 1992 to tell the largely unknown story of the United States Colored Troops (USCT). As a tribute to these soldiers, the African American Civil War Memorial was dedicated in July of 1998 by Dr. Frank Smith Jr., and Colin Powell. In honor of these American soldiers who fought for freedom during the American Civil War, the Spirit of Freedom: African American Civil War Memorial sculpture and its Wall of Honor, was situated in the heart of the historic U Street district, and serves as a reminder of the courageous story of the USCT. The sculpture portrays uniformed soldiers and a sailor at a height of ten feet with a family depicted on the back of the sculpture, and is situated in the center of a granite-paved plaza, encircled on three sides by the Wall of Honor. The wall lists the names of 209,145 USCT drawn from the official records of the Bureau of United States Colored Troops at the National Archives, on 166 burnished stainless steel plaques arranged by regiment.

A MUST SEE IF ON A TRIP TO DC! I decided to go on a weekday to avoid the crowd. I recommend booking a scheduled time on their website first to bypass the entry queue. From the accurate timeline of history (early days of slave trade to modern slavery) to the well articulated story’s and narratives, you will leave this museum with a sense of soberness, humility and joy as to how far we have come as humans. The 2 hours we spent taking in all the history definitely wasn’t enough. If you really want to get a full experience, I recommend dedicating a full day to the museum!

I truly enjoyed visiting the African American Civil War Museum and received a very informative history lesson from the Director before I wandered around! There was also an event going on but I was still able to get some great pics!! Will definitely be going back so I can see more!! Great place to visit!! So much HISTORY!!

This is a great little museum hidden away in DC. The staff are extremely knowledgable, and the collection has some real gems. They clearly put a lot of effort into researching the history. Highly recommend!

Text heavy exhibitions, but boy is it all needed and important information. The museum tells a comprehensive story of the black soldier via the black experience at large, including time periods well before and after the Civil War. Staff is A. One of the few museums that offer equally compelling experiences for visitors AND DC residents alike.
