Nice local experience. Friendly staff. Informative and fun for the whole family. Gift shop is nice for a quick and easy homeschool lesson on rocks.

My parents took me here when I was young, and now I take my son. Its a great little gem in the coal region. A really cool coal mine tour for your family. There is also a train ride too. Very educational and a neat gift shop. A nice playground, (some of the things have been there since i was young, still in working order hahaha) . Picnic area. Its just a really nice area.

Fantastic experience, very educational tour for the entire family. There is nothing like the mine tour; it’s a hidden treasure. The experience of going into the mine in the dark is unlike any other. The foresight and planning the town had to preserve this experience is truly amazing. The history of coal and the country is forever linked. It’s hard to imagine how tough these miners were and how hard they had to work for pennies but this gives you a flavor of it. To walk in the footsteps of the miners that fueled our country and imagine what it was like 100 years ago is a very humbling experience. The steam engine railroad ride is a nice add on. The slow ride through the Appalachian foothills takes you back in time for a nice scenic ride with a history lesson. It’s amazing to see and hear the train run in person. The videos do not do it justice.

I have visited here multiple times over the years. I thoroughly enjoy the coal mine tour every time! I learn a little bit more each visit. Unfortunately, the train was not running this past weekend - I was looking forward to it. Guess that just means I have to go visit again! Haha. Highly recommended - but just know, you’re going in a formerly active coal mine...you may get a little dirty!

A very nice place to go to learn about the history and process of coal mining. Guides are very informative. It was absolutely beautiful up there also.
