I have nothing personally against William and Chandra Vandry. However, I feel I need to let others know about my bad experience in hopes that they can avoid the same experience. I took both BJJ and kick boxing for over a year. In addition, I enrolled my 8 year old son in the kids BJJ classes. With adult BJJ, the classes were okay - William is certainly good at BJJ and a decent teacher. However, what turned me off was when I personally saw William hurt a few students (even though he claims he doesn't ever 'rip' submissions). Kick boxing with Chandra was also okay. She is super nice, but clearly not qualified. The classes are all pads and other drills, but NO sparring. So, it's great from a cardio perspective, you never learn to actually defend yourself. The kids class was even worse; often taught by white belts with only months of total BJJ experience. Being a martial arts novice, I didn't realize how much beter it could be until I went to a different school - better instruction, atmosphere, and kids classes. So, before you sign a binding contract with William, please look around and see what else is out there... good luck!

Completely toxic environment. William constantly makes extremely inappropriate comments about women. He also constantly pushes his religious beliefs and tries to sell his own 'miracle oil' during class. Look elsewhere especially if you're a woman.

Run away as fast as you can. I trained with William for about 1 year. Never before have I met a more unprofessional, sexist, and egotistical person. He even degrades his own wife Chandra in front of the class. Classes usually start very late due to William feeling the need to discuss his questionable beliefs with the class. Also the fact that he has been teaching in Austin for 20 years, yet has one of the smallest schools and a small number of long term students should be telling. Save yourself the agony and go train at one of the other excellent schools. I'd recommend BTT, Brazilian Fight Factory, or Coopers MMA - all within a few miles of Vandrys, and much better schools.

Clean facility. Friendly and helpful students. Top notch instruction. Not for \Muscle-Heads\ or \Mat-Hoppers\ just looking for a place to oll\. A legit, quality academy to train at and learn Jiu Jitsu from a top level instructor. As a visiting student, I always try to stop in for a visit when I am in Austin. I would strongly recommend Vandry BJJ to anyone looking for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the area.

GREAT TEACHER! GREAT PEOPLE! LOVE GOING TO CLASS! Hardest part about finding a good school is rolling with people who are trying to hurt you. Everyone here is respectful and they roll accordingly. GREAT SCHOOL!
