Good lunch / brunch place.. The five stars is because they have their own meat smokers in front of the place.. They served up a good portion of brisket with my eggs.. (and I'm always a fan of a place that drops off a craft of coffee on the table)

I've passed this place a number of times and finally got around to trying it out. One thing to keep in mind are their hours, which are breakfast and lunch only, so 8 a.m. till 3 p.m. My daughter and I stopped in for lunch on Oct 11th 2020. I had the sliced brisket and mac N cheese, comes with a 3 bite side of slaw too. The brisket is VERY tender, the smokers are in use in the parking lot, so freshness is guaranteed! The BBQ sauce has the right amount of tang, some will wish for more but its REALLY good. The mac N cheese is very creamy, pretty straight forward but good. That cole slaw, which is vinegar based is VERY good and I will get a larger size next time, along with their fries for sure. Speaking of next time...there will be a next time for sure and I'm getting the ribs! Parking is tight in their parking lot but there's plenty of parking on the side street their located on or the surrounding downtown area. The area is very nice to walk around and enjoy an afternoon but remember, they close at 3 p.m.
I ordered 2 brisket sandwiches to go. They were very tender but totally tasteless. They seemed to have not been seasoned well or not at all. I am no stranger to smoked brisket and this meal was a disappointment complete with the almost raw chips and the brown wilted cole slaw. I will not be back.
I had one of the best restaurant experiences ever here - the ribs were literally the best I’ve ever had, their Diablo skillet with brisket had a very unique, delicious taste with perfectly cooked brisket, their gluten-free pancakes tasted literally exactly like regular flour pancakes so much that I asked a couple times if they’re gluten-free, and the waitress was so nice and friendly in a genuine way. I live over half an hour away, but I was in the area to see a car dealership in Barrington, and I just randomly ended up here from a quick Google search. Best decision ever!! I just wish I didn’t live so far away, but that’s probably a good thing because I would eat here everyday. I was there with my mom and we both left in such a great mood...we even ended up ordering more food to go for the rest of our family. The whole experience made our day! Thank you Canteen Restaurant!
A great find. Apparently a mainstay in the area and some of the best breakfast food I have had in a long time. If you are a fan of biscuits and gravy then you will fall in love. I actually went with a custom order and they had no troubles. Price is right and the flavor and service more than worthwhile.
