I lived in Afro house for six semesters while attending Berkeley. It is a great way to stay connected with the Black community and build life long friendships. As a Black student in Berkeley, it can be lonesome as there aren’t many Black faces, but through Afro House I have made some of the best friends and we’ve supported one another through our educational journey. There are also other co-ops such as Loth and POC which is right across the street, and it was always fun to connect with them as well! I’ve grown so much and learned a lot from various Afro residents. Afro house is literally what you make it, and if you maintain positive energy, it will in fact be a positive and life changing experience!

Afro House is affordable. However, as a student who lived there 3 different times, I have to say, the money you save isn’t worth it. The house is very old (A manager told me over 100 years old) and it shows. In addition to this, I feel safety wasn’t a priority. Someone threatened to kill everyone in the house this past semester and I didn’t personally see any additional safety measures taken. Living in Afro has negatively affected the mental health and academic performance of numerous students over time, myself included. For these reasons, I would never personally recommend Afro to anyone. And I say this as someone who is very aware of the housing crisis in the Bay. In my opinion, it is NOT worth it.

Afro House is a great way to stay connected to the black community at Berkeley. As a resident I am happy to live here. The people are cool, and its a safe space to build connections. Afro makes Berkwley seem a little more friendlier and more intimate
