My late wife and I began attending retreats at the Hermitage in June 1973.....I had just returned to the church from an 9 year absence & my wife had just become Catholic ..... suffice to say we fell in love with the place ..... over the years, until her death in June of 2010, we drove up to the monastery at least every two-three months, and when our kids were grown we made at least two weekend retreats there yearly ..... we got to know the monks & they got to know us .... many times we enjoyed their hospitality by sharing a meal with them in their refectory .... it is simply a wonderful place to go to get your spiritual batteries recharged .... I have been remarried since 2012 & my present wife and I gave visited there three times .... an older now so I do not travel as much .... but I really want to get back up there ...!!! Thank you good monks for all you love & hospitality over the years ...!!! God bless, Jim & Sandi MorrisseyOceano California

A lovely stop for anyone (particularly of the Catholic faith) to stop. It's got a stunning view, beautiful regular services and great cottages to stay at.
There are some sacred places on this planet, which fill your heart with joy, bring calmness and New Camaldoli is definitely such place. Located on the top of the mountains overlooking the Big Sur and Pacific Ocean the place is simply a natural miracle. Hermitage offers to stay overnight for strangers with the different options. You may stay in the small cottage alone or there are the family cottages, meals are included. The Hermirage web-site provides the explicit information. One rule needs to be followed during the overnight stay, you need to practice the silence in the cottage, church and the garden facilities. A lot of people find peace in this silent retreat and re-evaluate the values of life. In the lovely gift shop you may talk, also in the drive way towards the Hermitage. The gift shop is so cosy, there are some very beautiful colourful paintings of Cameldolese monk Fr. Arthur Poulin. The garden is taken care by monks and you see how much work and love towards nature was put into the landscaping, there is even an citrus orchard in the backyard of the Hermitage. All in all here the soul is resting somehow.
Serene and beautiful. I haven't done a retreat yet, but I have enjoyed going to Sunday Mass (11 AM) there. The gift shop has delicious fruit cake. And the views of the ocean from up there are magnificent.
This place is the best I need more start to get rewards because the aire is love there
