This was our first trip to Ruffner Mountain and we were so happy with the preserve! The trails are well marked and well maintained. We took the Quarry Trail to the Overlook Trail. The Overlook Trail is right on the rim of the quarry and some areas are tight but it is well marked and you just need to be careful. We veered off on the Crusher Trail. These trails are just rugged enough but also not too rocky or too many roots. We loved the hike and went a little over 3 miles. We will certainly be back to take the Geology Trail and the Ridge Valley Loop.

I love Ruffner Mountain, it is a great preserve for hiking and just being out in nature. The trails are clear and maintained and range from easy hikes to difficult hikes. There is an old iron mine there that you can see and also a rock quarry with excellent views. Definitely one of my favorite places to go to!

Great place for hiking. Easily accessible, but feels very woodsy. Strenuous or easier hikes available. Lots of ups and downs.

This is my favorite park in Birmingham. The history of the mines and the feeling you get walking here is inspiring. To have such a beautiful serene nature preserve, with well marked trails and many park programs such as their plant sales and nature center is very special. The people who work here do so much to create a very peaceful nature area in a more rough part of town. Please read about the history of the mines before visiting so you can better appreciate it!

First time hiking at Ruffner. Hiked the quarry trail and then the ridge & valley trail. Wore the dog and I out! Cant wait to go back. Update: took my oldest with me today. Walked down to the quarry. Then we walked the ridge valley trail (brutal). Then we walked the crusher loop and took some pics of the old Iron Ore Crusher that is still out in the middle of the woods. Exhausted but worth it.
