There are over 45,000 burials in Historic Shadown Lawn Memorial Gardens. This African American cemetery dates back to 1889 and was once one of the best kept cemeteries in Alabama. It is very historic with relatives of First Lady, Mrs. Obama, military heroes, many well known civil rights activists, foot soldiers, school teachers and principals, pastors and others who helped build Birmingham over the last 100 plus years. It takes at least 60,000 per growing season just to keep the grass mowed. These funds are not currently available! The public's help is needed to help fund this project since the previous owners declared bankruptcy in 2001.
