Fernwood is a simple but beautiful place. I wish they had more trails, since as far as I know theres really only the 3-mile loop. But its a nice walk, moderately challenging but still very accessible. The vistas are nice places to relax for a few. Also its nice that they have unsupervised gun ranges that were recently improved, and free camping. Overall a nice place.

Park is nice and has a great view. Picnic area is sub par but still ok place to get away.

The gun range and camp ground are top notch. Especially the 3 gun ranges. Skeet, rifle and pistol.

This place is naturally beautiful, but the primitive restrooms (literally holes in the ground) and large number of mosquitoes around restrooms make it a bit stressful. There are not clear markings for directions, and there is no check-in area. We happened upon a ranger who provided a map of the area for us, which was very kind. He saw us go around in a circle and drive to a dead end... It was clear we didn't know where things were. I think if you really took advantage of everything here, you could really enjoy it. It's all free fun. There are shooting ranges and campgrounds. We were getting the hang of traveling through the area after only a day there. I wish we could have stayed longer, but I did worry about the viability of such an idea. The only water on site is non-potable, so you can't use it for anything unless you purify it. That adds another dimension to what kind of gear you need to bring, whether it's water or a filter and a stove. Communication was severely limited by spotty cell reception. I had to walk a quarter mile into the woods to get a signal. The forest is near an airport, so you'll hear a couple planes. As an armature camper, I'd say this area is forgiving but eye-opening about how to improve for future situations. I'M VERY GLAD I BROUGHT A PORTABLE GAS STOVE. It made the experience a whole lot better than it probably would have been... We brought a cast-iron pot, but we couldn't figure out how to put it on the fire without making the water taste like ash. You live and learn. \u003c3

I love camping here! There are 22 sites. It's always clean, peaceful and quiet . Even on a weekend, I have yet to see the place full. There is no water or hookups, no firewood for sale and the nearest store is miles away, except for a gas station in the town of Bloomington....so make sure you come prepared.
