This was a must-do activity on our list for our BBNP visit. It was such a unique (and humbling) experience. We were in the park during peak season so we had to park in an overflow parking lot and walk about a mile to the boarder crossing. Based on the parking situation, I was worried it would be packed in Mexico but it wasn't at all. Its fun walking through the boarder crossing. Even though the river was very low, we didn't feel like having wet boots all day so we took the row boats which were scraping the bottom of the water. We walked into town (we feel bad for the donkeys). Just follow the same dirt road as the donkeys and trucks to get into town. We felt safe the entire time. An armored Mexican military truck drove through Boquillas while we were on our way out. We ate/drank at both Mexican restaurants (preferred Boquillas restaurant but neither of them have great margaritas). I bought a couple souvenirs to support the local families. We walked all the way to the town boarder where there is a park and sand dunes. We had no problem getting back into the US. It's a memorable experience and worth the time. It probably took us about 4 hours total.

Bring your passport...you’re goin’ to Mexico! The crossing process was extremely easy and felt very safe the whole time. A memorable experience.
Crossed in February 2018 as a family with a 12yo. You will need a passport for this crossings and, in fact, for travelling on any road outside Big Bend NP as the border patrols are very strict here and check all your documents. The crossing from US to Mexico is fast. Don’t forget to get a stamp in Boquillas del Carmen, there is a van there. On your way back, your documents will be hand checked by an officer. if you are on a US visa, you need to know that they won’t be able to put a stamp into your passport. you will need to make a call from a landline there and they will complete the process electronically. Overall, an interesting experience, if you like visiting financially struggling neighbourhoods. I felt that providing transportation and food to the tourists was the only source of income for the people on the Mexican side and they drove from far and wide to be here. The food was delicious and cheap. The souvenirs were colourful and photogenic.
This is a really great day trip if you're visiting Big Bend NP. However, do mind the opening and closing hours of this border crossing. They typically close at 5pm sharp. So if you decide to cross for the day you need to allow yourself enough time to return to the border station for reentry.
Top of my list of things to do when visiting Big Bend
Skip the mexico visit. It is not cute, it is gross. No kidding, taco bell has tastier food. Had to salt the gauc to het some flavor. Is severe poverty and everyone has their hand out. So much more to see in Big Bend.
Highly recommend going here when visiting Big Bend National Park! Don't forget your passport - you will need to scan it at a machine identical to the ones at airports and speak with a park ranger. Smooth process. Bring cash to tip the guys that row you across the Rio Grande and assist you with the donkey ride to boquillas. Fun experiencing rural Mexican culture.
