It is a close and beautiful hike. Maybe not as challenging as some hikes but it does manage to push your efforts in some spots.

This review is of the Bull Run Natural Area Preserve (hiking area) NOT of the Conservancy itself. Overall, the experience was enjoyable. I went mid-week, so there was plenty of free parking and I had the trails almost entirely to myself. I did the green loop, and used the red and brown trails to navigate around the closed off northwestern section. All of the trails are easy to walk as far as incline and footing and the majority of the trails are heavily shaded. Colored markers and simple signage help keep you on your chosen route. I wouldn't recommend this as a historical walk though. What few sights there are, have no markers or information provided.

Several nice, easy hikes along lightly used wooded trails with bits of local history along the way.

Go early to beat the crowds. The longest trail is 3.5 miles and has a bunch of uphill sections but if this out of shape asthmatic can do it, so can you. The green trail runs alongside a creek for about half the length and it was so peaceful. Go when it hasn't rained for a few days so the ground is dry and not swampy. Be careful because there's lot of wildlife everywhere and you don't want to step on a turtle. It was my first time there and I'll definitely be back.

Went in late summer mid August. Was probably at its best compared to early spring or fall. No washouts. Relatively dry. Took about hour and 45 minutes with some stops for red moderate 3.4 mile trail. Nice trail with some moderate elevation 400ft? (Based on smart watch) over moderate runs. Enough to get heart and lungs pumping but did not need to stop at all other than taking photos. About 20 people spread in various groups over trail. So enough to get clear personal space. (That factored into rating). Overall the rating would be less than 5. However for a relatively perfect hike trip went high. BtW. Stop at Haymarket Starbucks (10 minutes) before leaving area. Nice way to wrap up.
