I loved this part of the island. It’s a shame you can’t go into some of the buildings right now but what is open is cool. I had some moments in it all alone which was cool. They are doing repair work on it which is good.

A must-visit for history buffs. The living quarters for soldiers and their families and the old cannons on display really give visitors a sense of what the place was like when it was a military facility, built to guard New York against attacks. You can spend as much time here but if your schedule is tight, I'd say allot at least 20 minutes to fully appreciate the place. Guided tours are available - check the park website for the schedule. There are no restrooms here and some areas are not wheelchair accessible.
Remember the old saying \SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE *****\. I have such fond memories living in bldg.111 from 1957-62. Fort Jay was the view from our living room window. As a kid of 10 - 15 years old it was the most wonderful place to play around. Football and golf in the moat in the summer and sledding on the surrounding golf course in the winter. Always enjoyed digging in the sand at the pistol range (in the moat) for bullets. Great times when it snowed - jumping off the bridge into the deep snow. Always loved hearing TAPS over the speaker system in the evening. What great times!
Not sure what to say this place is amazing! I had so much fun riding the bike I rented and the Jazz Party on the Lawn was taking place the day I visited, who can ask for more. The oyster bar is a must visit everytime you enter the island.
Lived there as a child in the late 1970s, came back for a visit in 2015 and was very pleased with the efforts by the NPS to maintain the property. Looking forward to camping there someday.
