This home was a lovely weekend retreat. The website photos show the great exterior, but you don’t truly visualize the large expanse of fields and ponds until you are on-site. With sheers on the windows, even the bedrooms let in lots of natural light. And with acres and ponds and a creek (with rope swing) to explore, you won’t want to sleep in. The interior has spacious rooms and comfortable furniture. The master bedroom suite has an oversized tub with great water pressure and a nice showerhead. The owner left a note saying the curtain did not need to be closed to shower, and she was right – it was spacious. The second full bathroom had an old dresser that was turned into a clever sink and a clawfoot bathtub, also with shower. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots and baking dishes so we made lasagna one night, but there are restaurants in Caledonia, Potosi, and Farmington. If you have a larger group, you can also rent the lower floor which has its own kitchen and living spaces, in addition to bedrooms. But you will never share the house with a separate group. Your nearest neighbors are across the fields so you have the place to yourself. There aren’t any numbers on the mailbox and the Google pin takes you to 1 driveway before where you really want to be, but the owner gave us landmarks and we found our way there just fine, even in the dark. Plenty of park areas in the vicinity. Our favorite is Elephant Rocks for a short unique hike. Hughes Mountain is even closer and has cool volcanic rocks and a great view at the top. If you want a day in the water, we love Johnson’s Shut-Ins. My husband plans a dirtbiking trip to St. Joes every spring. Lots of good country fun around Caledonia. Whenever we have friends or family who need lodging in the area, we will recommend Five Oaks.

This place is a hidden gem. My family and I recently stayed here because we were attending a memorial service in nearby Ironton. The house is located on a farm and is just a short distance from the small & very neat downtown of Caledonia. Not only was the house itself was great, but the surroundings were picture perfect. They have an old barn, several decks and patios, ponds, access to a creek, a tire swing and more. We especially loved the sunset and the field of thousands of fireflies at night.
