Before visiting, I was like every other non-curler out there—I didn't know how to play, score, or even spectate the sport of curling. However, Gary at Copper Country Curling Club (CCCC) was influential in both building my knowledge and the great day. When my family showed up to CCCC, we had no idea what to expect. The only time we had watched curling was during the Winter Olympic Games every four years. Because of this, we had very little knowledge as to how the game is played; but, that quickly changed. We walked into the old drill-bit factory to find a heated spectator room and Gary from CCCC. We got right down to business signing the needed waivers, and we were off. After a brief history lesson, we headed out to the two curling sheets. Let me tell you, the environment at CCCC is amazing. With the stone walls and rustic wood surrounding the two sheets, it's easy to find your eyes wandering around the building. Anyways, Gary taught us all the basic form for throwing and sweeping, being sure to accommodate for all abilities. He was quick to help correct form and ensured that we knew what was going on from a rules standpoint. He was very helpful. Following our practice, Gary let us play a few ends and it was a ball! After our time was up, we all agreed that it was super fun and we'd love to do it again! Overall, I would highly recommend CCCC for anyone looking for something fun to do in the Keweenaw, regardless of your ability.
