Went into Camera world today because I had a shoot downtown and needed an SD card as I had left all of mine with a fellow photographer. I was in a fix and needed an SD card ASAP. While checking out I produced a credit card that was my mother's, I had lost my debit card and she was letting me use it while my new one was being issued. I explained this to the guy helping me when he asked to see my ID while checking out. He refused to sell me the SD card because the credit card was not in my name. I showed him my ID and explained that I had the same last name, but it didn't make a difference. Now, I have worked in retail for 7 years and understand what it's like to be in his shoes. However, I was not making a large purchase ( it was roughly 16) and I was in a tight spot. I understand why policies like this are in place, to protect people from fraud. Whenever people ask to see my ID while purchasing an item that costs a lot I always thank them for checking. However, this was not a large purchase and I REALLY needed this SD card. I left feeling very frustrated. Camera World failed to provide a customer in need with service that is understanding of special circumstances. I went out of my way by going to Camera World and was now late for my shoot. So I went across the street to Office Depot who not only had the EXACT same SD card, but had it at a better price. In the end I got what I needed, no thanks to Camera World.

I'm completely shocked by the poor reviews, I absolutely LOVE Camera World. I have found the staff to be amazingly helpful. I've gone there to just pick up some backdrop paper before and found the staff to be overly helpful if anything, actually making me feel guilty for not spending more money. The are very sweet and knowledgeable and the customer service is excellent. Their prices are great and they are very welcoming, compared to another well know camera store that feels more like an old boys club when you walk in.
This is THE place to go for photographers in Portland. The have the best prices I have found (even meeting B&H at times), great selection, and a great rental department. And, most importantly, no attitude! I found all of the staff to be very open and helpful, no matter what level you are shooting. oh, and they carry Pentax... which makes them awesome by default. :)
The service was absolutely horrendous. I can't imagine any salesperson in there liking any customer other than one that walks into the store knowing they want to buy a 5,000 product and spending no more than 30 seconds in the store doing so. If you're not that kind of customer, don't go there! I asked for advice from a guy who appeared to be a manager and he was completely put off by the fact that my question wasn't completely clear to him. He answered with "You're going to have to give me more detailed information", in a tone that told me that he would have preferred that I just walk out of the store and quit bothering him. So I did.
Super helpful staff. I've just started renting lenses there and everyone is always friendly. They take their time to explain products. Love it!
I went in looking for a camera backpack. They have a very nice selection. Better than the camera store up the block. The salesman was very helpful and shared his experience with using some of the backpacks. I did buy one of the larger backpacks. The price of the backpacks is inline with Amazon prices.
Lived in Portland in the 80's, I bought my first SLR there. Best experience of my young life. Just got a carbon fiber tripod, for an amazing price from Camera World! The best place ever for camera supplies!
Friendly knowledgeable staff. Would like to see a bit wider selection of items but darn cool place to check out photography gear and fair prices with no tax.
