This is an Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Project of The Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The purpose as the title suggests is to reclaim lands affected by surface mining and to restore those lands as much as is reasonably possible to their natural state. For example, replacing the topsoil as one element of the restoration process. This particular site would be the former Buckheart Mine. Funding for the project is provided by The U.S. Department of The Interior Office of Surface Mining with fees paid by the Coal Industry.
