An unreal and otherworldly experience. If you don’t have an all wheel vehicle, stick to Soda Lake Road north entrance and follow the paved road south for twenty miles until it ends in a dirt road path. Even with that limitation, there will be plenty to do here. Be sure to read a little about the lake to appreciate the ecology of the area – basically an open wound of earth running along two tectonic plates. The songbirds here are copious and magnificent. The silver-tinged grass (from the salt lake embedded in the area’s dirt) sways gently all day long. In a time when getting some solitude is a premium, this is a good place to come. Driving here feels like stripping off a layer and feeling closer to nature.

Get away from it all! Lots of birds if you are lucky you might see tbe second fastest land animal in the entire world the pronghorn antelope. In the fall there are tarantulas to be seen this is truly a california gem. Bring extra food and water as you will be alone and make sure you car is full of gas. Drive safe

Beautiful place to visit, very serene, we went to see Wallace creek specifically, San Andreas fault redirected the bed north, the rest of the park was awesome as well, keep in mind this is nature, no floor shows or air conditioning ha ha ha, its Nature. We went on to Parkfield to further explore the fault line. Very nice for observation of the solar system, very clear night, no lights to impede the view, enjoy!

Absolutely stunning visit. I came out here on the off season a few years ago. It was quite dry. There were no flowers (sadly...I hear the brief bloom season is one of the wonders of the world) and absolutely no people...I mean none. It is wide-open country here. The salt flats are amazing and there are a great number of side roads to explore and many trails. All of the boardwalks were in good working order. You should make sure you fill up your tank completely before heading out. That, and you should ensure you have a few gallons of water and a decent supply of food...especially if you are visiting in the off season. You will not likely see a soul.
