I called around Charleston to reserve a couple of bushels of blue crabs for a party the following weekend and to my chagrin was told repeatedly that this was a bad year for blue crabs and that bushels couldn't be had or that I would have to wait and see what was available the day of the party. After about a half dozen phone calls I spoke with Shawn at Seafood Alley. He stated that he could provide as many bushels as I wanted. I further pressed my luck by requesting #1's and he assured me that he could deliver, and deliver he did. I arrived to pick up my order on the specified date and time and the crabs were not only there but they were consistently the biggest and best blue crabs I have had in years. Many in attendance at the party are from the northern Virginia, D.C., Maryland area and as such are somewhat blue carb conisseurs. They shared my sentiment regarding both the size and quality of the crabs. What really astounded them was the price, 100 a bushel. They informed me that recently they had paid 300 a bushel for crabs half the size back home. (Of course this is relative, given where home is). The bottom line, I received what was promised when promised and what I received exceeded my expectations in both quality and price. The service was great and I will be purchasing from this vendor exclusively when visiting the area.
What a great find! Not only did they have fresh, local seafood at decent prices, they stream it for you! Very friendly, family business.
Really, really surprised there aren't many reviews for this amazing little spot. They usually have 5 - 10 choices of local catch on ice. Check the eyes for fogginess, if they are foggy, steer clear. You'll see this happen in some larger grocery stores. But all the fish at seafood alley always look quite fresh. That their product changes with what's in season is definitely a good thing. Support your local business!!
Got some local shrimp from here a few weeks ago, they were amazing and you could tell that they were fresh.
