Two of my bags did not arrive. The one that did arrive was torn open because it was locked and my stuff stolen out of it. The stuff they stole just happened to be my son's birthday presents and brand new clothes. The two bags that did not arrive one had all my clothes in it. The other bag had all my mom's stuff that she needs for her medication. When I informed the lady at the train station, in Charlottesville she was the least bit concerned all she could tell me was to call the 1-800 number. That's all the help she would give me. I am so distraught right now and the lack of concern from Amtrak was very disheartening to say the least.

This is such an odd place. First, the positives: The staff are very friendly and do the best they can with the station and the train service they have. The restrooms are clean. Parking is expensive but always available, which makes pickups easy. The location is great, right in the center of town equidistant between the university area and the downtown mall. However, the station is a relic from the 19th century. Neither platforms are covered (except for a narrow, pigeon-infested bridge underpass section) and both are low platforms that make boarding slow because a conductor is required at each open door. I don't understand the barrier to a raised platform that would allow for easier and faster boarding. Handicap accessibility is minimal and requires a hand crank elevator for access, which doesn't even fully extend to the height of the train on the secondary platform. That platform is just a rough patch of asphalt. This station makes me a bit sad. Likewise, the train service is very spotty. There are two slow trains a day to DC, though one is often delayed because of a long journey from Louisiana. It is much nicer than driving and gets you right into DC by mid morning, but I wish there were more options.

Huge shout out to Cody, Howard, Terrance and Andrea. Also, the Amtrak police officer (I didn’t catch name). I was on train 51 to Hinton WV. This was our first time using Amtrak and these four employees went out of their way to greet us with a warm welcome, be so friendly and help guide us. It was an absolute delight. I hope corporate see this and gives these folks acknowledgment and the recognition they deserve. I wish airline employees offered such a personalized friendly service. We will definitely be using Amtrak in the future! Thanks guys!
