Andy did a jury trial for me back in 2008 for a matter of public speech that is of a nature that, generally speaking, those in law enforcement are not sympathetic to. I had the general sense that the judge was not particularly sympathetic to me as an individual either. The judge did a big sigh when we opted to go jury instead of bench. It was a two day gig. One to pick jurors and one for the actual trial. When it was over that same judge asked Andy to approach the bench to tell him that his professionalism and refined trial skill made it a pleasure to experience the kind of trial that day that reminded the judge of why they went into the law profession to begin with and caused the judge to reminisce about the idealism that energized them during their law school days. With all of his skill, he has no airs about him at all. He actually thanked me for passing me a note about a certain juror I was concerned about and wanted to exclude even though he did not initially see why. He did not dismiss me but kept the process very collaborative. There is no grandiosity about his technique, rather, he has this even keeled pace and logic. The jury only took 40 minutes and to come to a decision. It was a great day in court.
