I've been a student since August 2018 in the Columbia location. Before joining here I took a couple lessons at a different academy and I can definitely say I made the right choice here. Super clean, friendly environment, great teachers. I super recommend Rising Tide Academy.

I started training shortly before my 40th birthday and wow, what a journey it has been! It is the most physically, mentally, and emotionally difficult thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also been one of the most rewarding and gratifying. Before I started training, I was under the illusion that I would be able to fight off an attacker. I lift weights. I took TaeKwonDo in high school. I’ve done self-defense seminars. Yea nope. Prior to starting BJJ, I would most definitely NOT have been able to fight off a male attacker. Mike, Jordan, and their team completely shattered that illusion, and potentially saved my life. Now, after 6 months of training, I feel pretty confident that I WOULD be able to at least get away from an attacker, even someone 2-3 times my size, which is SO empowering. I’ve also lost 75 pounds (which training in BJJ helped me to lose along with lifting and intermittent fasting), and I’m the healthiest I’ve probably ever been in my life. Strict and fastidious cleaning is a priority here also. There is hand sanitizer as soon as you walk in the door, sanitizing wipes and peroxide are readily available, and the mats are cleaned and sanitized between EVERY class. The instructors are all extremely knowledgeable, and they genuinely care about you as a person. Mike and his team are also active and giving in the community, with donations (monetary as well as other types of donations), taking part in fundraising, and volunteering at several different organizations. They are passionate about BJJ, their communities, their students, and their families, and it shows in how they teach and run their school, and in their day-to-day actions. I cannot recommend Rising Tide Academy enough. It’s a pleasure and an honor to be able to train at such a great school. The words “Thank you” will never be able to fully express my gratitude to Rising Tide and BJJ.
