I could not possibly overstate how impressed I was with Trail Days Cafe. The very kind owner welcomed me, turned the lights on upstairs so I could go see some 1880s bedrooms, entertained me with a couple of historic stories and cooked my food. There was a binder with historical stories local to Council Grove for me to read while I waited. Their menu has several dishes you might have been able to eat in the 1800s at the tables of the immigrants to the area- Swedish, German, English. I chose Elk Roast with succotash and pickled beets. I have never eaten Elk before and do not tend to like deer....but I was very pleasantly surprised. It was so delicious and tender! I will definitely go back to Trail Days!

If you are in Council Grove, this is where you should have lunch or dinner! The menu is an eclectic mix of Native American and various European dishes. Everything we ate was delicious. Due to Covid, they were only serving on the porch, but it was a lovely evening. The hosts are so friendly and informative! Other members of the local Historical Society came there to eat and we have amazing conversations. We were able to see the other historical buildings and mural on the site. We hope next time we can see the inside of the house for this is a true labor of love!

It was a wonderful cafe that had lots of history! The food wasn't bad either. Lol

We stopped here on our way to Albine, Ks. This place is packed with history. We toured the museum while they prepared our meal. The menu is varied and the service is great. We had elk, sweet potatoes and cherry strawberry pie. The place has a corner with children books and toys , It is a great option for the whole family.

I went in just before they were to have a group of 30 for lunch, so I wasn't able to eat. It's probably best to check if they can serve you before you go. Even though the owners were busy preparing the meal for the group, the gentleman stopped and gave me a quick orientation to the place and its history. I was then able to look around at the pictures and artifacts, including the lower seating area and the upstairs trail period bedroom display. There is also a variety of historic out-buildings scattered around the property.
