I was there to attend the annual dinner of the county historical society, which was catered in the lower-level meeting room. But we were also given a tour of the sanctuary and a short presentation about the history of the church and the meaning of the stained glass windows. It is not a large worship space, which makes it seem comfortable on a human scale. But the stone columns and high ceiling impart enough grandeur to remind one that this is, after all, a place dedicated to the worship of the Almighty. And the windows provide just enough light and color to give it all a comforting glow. I was struck by the thought that this church is probably very much like many a small village church in the English countryside.
