The history center is a satisfactory historic home and city history center. Probably not for young children because a lot of the furnishings are not behind stanchions. Also check out their accessibility notes on their website before visiting. If the narrative through the house had been comprehensive, I would have given 4 or 5 stars. The first floor is gorgeous and has a lot to offer in terms of history and architecture. I enjoyed the portraits, decorative arts, and volunteers/staff on the floor. The house is right on the lake too, so it was great to walk over and play in the sand for a bit. On the second floor there are exhibitions that are very overwhelming. I walked into a room with a clothing accessory display and I felt like I was at a garage sale; there were so many things to look at all stuffed onto tables. There were a few special items out but their importance seemed masked by the amount of STUFF out on display. I wish there would have been less objects and more literature/educational material about them.
