Highly recommend Betty’s Azalea Ranch. This is the second property where we have had them plan and install landscaping. Kevin again came up with a great plan and talked with us about our vision for the property and showed us different options and plant choices . Juan and his team did a great job on defining and prepping the beds and installing the plants . In addition, Juan did a meticulous job constructing the stack stone wall We would definitely use them again

Betty's Azalea Ranch makes it very difficult to argue for any score of 3 stars or above. I have gone there multiple times thinking that I just ended up with someone that was having a bad day, because the attitude for many of their employees leaves a lot to be desired. Overall I question their business model and how they expect to compete when Merrifield is only 1/4 mile down the road and has significantly better customer service. I don't see their business lasting much longer unless they change. 1) I've gone to Betty's Azalea Ranch and found several plant containers that are chipped or broken but still usable and they refuse to discount it in anyway, unless already marked. They would rather not sell an item at all and let it continue to sit on a shelf for what seemingly seems to be for years than to sell it for a discounted price 2) I will say the quality and variety of the plants is good, as well as their knowledge of them is good, but that's as far as the positives go. If you ask for help you're likely to end up with someone just pointing in a direction that you should go or telling you they have a map on their website as opposed to helping to guide you where it is you could find a specific plant. 3) Their hours of operation mean that if you work 9-5 you're lucky if you can get there before they close. I managed to get out of a work call early and arrive there at 4:30 pm and every employee spent more time reminding me that they were closing at 5pm as opposed to offering me help or any assistance (I'm assuming they really don't like making sales?). Bottom line upfront: You're better off finding good quality plants, garden tools, accessories, and plant containers elsewhere lest you choose to be or enjoy being treated with disdain.

️ I have used a number of landscape/hardscape contractors over many years. I have mainly relied on Merrifield Garden Center for larger projects recently finding quality of work very good but MGC is not so good with communication and consistency in pricing in my opinion and experience. In winter of 2016-2017 I worked with Renata Duarte at Betty’s Asaelia Ranch for design and building a retaining wall, patio and drainage at a property I manage in McLean. My clients, property owners, live in Houston, are retired and wanted to be active in the project flying up a couple of times during planning and execution. Agreeing on design, terms and scheduling start date in mid January, upon signing contract and paying sizable down payment Renata announced that she was leaving on a one month vacation to Brazil before work start date and that she would supervise her team from Brazil by email and phone. You can imagine how that went. There aren’t enough characters here to describe it. On February 20, 2017 Renata returned. Along with bad weather interrupting progress the project was finished on March 3, 2017. End result was very good and price reasonable compared to MGC bid and sensationally reasonable compared to Wheat’s bid. BAR crew was skilled, focused and well choreographed. In my opinion Renata Duarte was deceitful not disclosing she was going on month long vacation during design and negotiation period. Communication was burdensome since crew and I did not share a common language to communicate in and our interpreter, BAR landscape designer and sales representative, Renata, during 4 rain filled weeks here, was vacationing in Brazil. Experiences like this are common when contracting for what is known as “home improvement” work in Northern Virginia. The old Tom Hanks, Shelly Long movie “The Money Pit” plays in my mind when I find myself entangled in scenarios like this BAR one. The contractor gags in the movie are real life for me.

I'm all for supporting local businesses. The good is they have a wide selection and often below Home Depot prices. On the bad, is they knowingly sold me a diseased shrub. I'll spare the details, but when someone brings a diseased shrub to buy to the front, since this is a local garden center, maybe they should tell you. I ended up going online to see if the leaves on my shrub were diseased and sure enough the pictures are too similar. I didn't know when I bought it, just thought some water would help it out. Also on the bad, with Home Depot I have no problem returning a plant or shrub, I'm not so sure about Betty's though. HD simply doesn't ask questions if it has been less than 1 year! The take home is don't buy anything that could possibly look diseased or damaged or unwatered from this place and you'll be happy - sort of common sense in retrospect,

Of the 5-6 large nurseries in the NCR, this one is our new favorite. Beth is extremely knowledgable and helpful. The prices are better than other nurseries. The 16-acre property is nice to walk and explore.
