Complete application and then use SignupGenius to get an appointment to visit with dogs and cats. They work hard to try to make good matches. The website doesn't necessarily have the most current information so best to go in person and not have your heart set on a specific dog.

We are very grateful for Homeward Trails and their help finding our wonderful dog. We were looking for three months and investigated several different shelters and rescue organizations in the DMV. We chose Homeward Trails because they are well-organized, they are regularly getting a new dogs, and they have a simple, painless adoption process. They also have a large variety of animals from many sources--Puerto Rico, West Virginia, even a South Korean meat farm. They have puppies and senior dogs, large and small, though for us, it did take patience to wait for the right one. They are high volume, because they are very focused on saving as many dogs as possible. If you're attached to an animal, you may need to make a decision on the spot, and you may find that the dog on the website is gone before you see it. But that could also be a consequence of the COVID 19 surge in demand. On that note, we felt safe with their COVID precautions throughout the process.

I’ve seen a lot of complaints regarding a minimum age of 21 to adopt a dog. In most states, you have to be 25 to temporarily rent a car..... and that’s not a living thing. The shelter is absolutely doing the right thing by not adopting to people under 21; and if it were me, I would make the minimum age 25. I have yet to meet a 19 year old who is financially, emotionally and mentally stable enough to PROPERLY raise an animal. Most of the negative comments I’ve seen here sound like the shelter was doing its job. Their job is to make sure that their animals go to responsible and educated owners. They’re trying to stop people from improperly breeding so that more dogs don’t end up in shelters. If they’re rejecting someone as an owner, there’s probably a good reason. Not everyone is prepared to be a dog owner and a lot of people don’t understand the amount of time, money and energy that goes into a dog- especially a puppy. Some people need to really ask themselves “why are there SO many dogs in shelters all over the country??” A majority of them are there because their owners had no idea what they were doing or neglected the dogs because they weren’t equipped to properly care for them. Keep up the good work Homeward Trails.

We have adopted 2 dogs from them. Always a great experience. The Tails out program is awesome. We wound up with a hard to place dog because she was so nervous at the shelter. Yet with the 1 week at our house she relaxed and we discovered she is the perfect dog. This dog is sweet and well mannered, she is just a little timid and needed a home and some love
