I went by the stand in my way home and purchased 2 1/2 pecks of apples. 2 different kinds. I asked the gentleman which was the freshest and which makes the best applesauce. He picked out the one for applesauce and the one for apple pie. I paid 6 per 1/2 peck. When I got home, I opened the bags. The apples were not at all fresh. I threw ATLEAST 1/2 peck away. I am so disappointed because I have been here yearly for over 10 years. It was partly my fault because apple season ended late October; but I would have never fathomed someone here would sell rotten apples. Especially when I asked for the freshest and was assured these were the ones.

We stayed at the Lodge at Flat Rock, right up the street. We went to a few orchards and the apples and pricing at McAbee's was great. The apples are the same and the price was about 40% lower. We paid 7.99 for a 1/2 peck at an orchard and 9 for a full peck at McAbee's - and we didn't need to wait in the long lines and find a parking spot. If they had apple cider donuts we wouldn't have needed an orchard at all.

So glad we were able to make our yearly late summer stop for apples and peaches. Wish we lived closer!
