When you take the back roads rather than the highways, you come across places like this little beautiful gem just outside of Front Royal. Especially this 3rd week of October could not have been any more beautiful. There was camping available but we just stopped in the day area, hiked, then had a picnic lunch.

This is our go-to area for camping. If you're the adventurous type make sure you go across the street and park in the gravel lot, directly across from the campground. You can camp for free anywhere in the forest with minimal exceptions. There are plenty of sites off every trail that have tent areas etc. Much better than going to local campgrounds etc. Cell service on the mountain is pretty good. The only place we didn't have service is on the main road and anywhere where you're \in\ the valley. AT&T has the best coverage. If you find yourself with no service just head UP.

really nice area with access to lots of trails. the interpretive trails are interesting. my 1 star is for the forestry people that manage this place. for some reason they close the big parking lot in the cold months while the little lot is crammed full. i'm there on a cold blustery non holiday middle of the week visit and it's at capacity plus cars parked in the do not park zone. i guess they think nobody does nature stuff when it's winter? whats the reason for closing the big lot? there's nothing there except...lots of parking spots. i've hiked the trails in that area so i'm glad i won't need to come back

Beautiful hikes up and along the ridge with breathtaking views of the Fort Valley and Shenandoah Valley. Not crowded at all!

Tucked away in the GWNF is this nice little pull off. We had a great time fishing the afternoon away. Easy access to Passage Creek, but make sure you have your VA trout stamp and National Forest stamp if you plan to fish. If not, there are plenty of spots to picnic with tables and built-in BBQ grills. Lots of free parking and restrooms are available as well. ***WARNING*** There's a ton of poison ivy everywhere so be careful.
