Mr. James is a professional and truly one of a kind piano teacher. With a very special approach to teaching, especially towards kids, my own three love their piano lessons and not less important - Make real progress. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to understand music, playing piano and further more - connect through art. Stephen James is a true teacher for life.

I was looking for a very advanced classical piano teacher that would not apply typical pressure techniques, common to many piano instructors. I was referred to Stephen James. And he turned out to be exactly who I was looking for. I have now been taking piano lessons with Stephen for over a year. I am a fairly advanced adult student and have had a few teachers before, both in Europe and the US. I have also taught piano myself. Stephen stands out significantly with his approach to teaching that focuses on relaxation, balance, proper methodology, and technique. I have been able to make much greater progress with him than any other teachers and am able to play far more complex classical pieces, with more ease than before. I leave each lesson having made considerable progress on one or two complex passages. I never thought I'd be able to make this much progress as an adult, at a relaxed and pleasant pace. I have also become a better teacher myself, thanks to Stephen and his philosophy. Not only is Stephen a highly educated musician and a skilful pianist, he is also a delightful astute individual. Stephen is an empathetic, kind hearted teacher with an amusing sense of humor. He is very patient and meets the student at his or her level. He motivates and challenges his students to do their best. I recommend him highly as a fantastic teacher for both children and adults.
I have been studying piano with Stephen for a number of years. He is a highly skilled musician and can communicate his knowledge of music to students whatever their level or age. As an older student, it is sometimes difficult to overcome habits of tension and resistance. Stephen has an amazing ability to help me overcome these blockages and allow me to progress. He has helped me to tackle and complete pieces that I never expected to be able to play.
I was new to piano when I started lessons with Stephen nearly two years ago. I am a middle-aged adult who previously had absolutely zero experience playing any sort of musical instrument. I spent several weeks searching for an instructor and finally approached Stephen after reading an on-line statement about his philosophy and method of instruction. I was impressed that he has an actual philosophy and method of instruction. Not all instructors do. A key part of Stephen’s method is to immediately introduce the student to an awareness of mind and body while learning and playing. At the risk of oversimplifying, I would say that Stephen will introduce you to a rather unique method of practice meant to reduce tension while maintaining focus which will result in not only better playing, but more enjoyable playing. As a busy professional with a fairly demanding job, I was not looking to introduce more stress into my life by taking up the piano. Stephen has been the perfect fit in that regard. He is extremely patient and always encouraging. He is always pleasant and every lesson (now over 90 of them) has been enjoyable. Even when I show up struggling with a piece thinking that I am failing in some respect, I always leave feeling bolstered with the sense that I have learned something and that progress is being made. I would highly recommend Stephen. I know that his students range from very young children and older adult beginners to accomplished players with many years of experience. From personal experience, as an adult beginner, I don’t think I could have found a better piano instructor.
