Let me start off with that Jim is a nice guy and seems to be a knowledgeable scuba instructor. He’s been in the business years and has managed to continue this passion even though he operates out of his home. Although this is the case I would never recommend anyone attempt to get certified with/though AJ Scuba/Jim. Getting your basic or even advanced scuba certification should never take more than a couple of weeks as it only involves a few class room sessions, some pool training and a couple of dives in a local lake or quarry. Jim stretches this process out over weeks, even months. He’ll call late canceling dives 9:30-10pm the night before. Recently on a day trip scuba diving with him, a student of his asked for help with draining their rented BCD (Buoyancy compensator device) after diving. Upon unscrewing the drain valve I was hit with the foulest smell and discovered a Petri dish of gross growth growing inside the bcd. This told me that Jim’s/AJ Scuba’s equipment doesn’t get the maintenance that is required for gear that is your diving life support. He also misplaces paper work requiring the need for its replacement. He fills air tanks too for rental and student use. Does his lack of maintenance and inattention to detail carry over to this very air you need to stay alive underwater? Scuba culture is inherently laid back and is a relaxed sport but it can can kill if done improperly and if there are gear failures due to improper negligent maintenance. It pains me to write this but there are better/safer/faster local dive shops in the Milwaukee area that will serve your scuba needs better.
